What is degree conferral? Is it the same thing as commencement?

Degree conferral and commencement are different. Commencement is a one-time, celebratory, regional ceremony. Degree conferral involves the administrative process necessary to officially award your degree.

Who is eligible for honors designation?

Honors are awarded according to the following grade point averages and are determined only for courses taken at National University:

Undergraduate honors:

  • Summa Cum Laude: 3.90
  • Magna Cum Laude: 3.70
  • Cum Laude: 3.50

Graduate honors:

  • Distinction: 3.85

Undergraduate students must have completed 45 quarter units and graduate students must have completed 40.5 quarter units in their degree programs at National University to be considered for honors designation.

Where are honors noted?

Honors are noted on your diploma and on official university transcripts after your degree is officially awarded.

When will I receive my diploma?

Your diploma will be mailed to you approximately six weeks after your official conferral date. Remember, your diploma will only be mailed to you after all financial obligations have been met.

What size are the diplomas?

The diplomas for masters, bachelors, and associates are 8.5 by 11 inches. The diplomas for doctorates are 11 by 14 inches.

What is listed on the diploma?

The degree level, major, minors, concentrations, specializations, and emphasis are listed on the diploma. Credentials and certificates are NOT listed on the diploma. Students must request to be enrolled in any minor, concentration, specialization, or emphasis prior to graduation.

When will my degree show up on my transcripts?

Degrees post to official transcripts on the conferral date. If you order transcripts before your conferral date, they will only list the courses you have taken.
